Things to do in Sougia: walks, sea, old stones and slow evenings
A small village with more to do than it first seems. Everything here starts within walking distance, or one boat ride away.

Sougia has one road, one long pebble beach and no big sights. What it has is a lot to do on foot, by boat and at the table. This is the short version; each line leads to a longer story.
Walk
Lissos, the healing sanctuary over the headland. The path starts at the harbour, about an hour to an hour and a half each way.
The Agia Irini gorge, greener and quieter than Samaria, about three hours downhill to just above the village.

The Cyclops cave, two hours on foot from Koustogerako to the cave Crete links with the Odyssey.

Two marked Chania Trails routes also start in Sougia: the S2 “Panoramic Ridge”, 15.4 km and about seven hours with some 960 m of climbing, and the path up the Kamariano stream to Kamaria, 6.2 km and about three hours. The signposts and the map board are on the beach, by Lotos café.
Swim and sail
The beach is more than a kilometre long, so there is room even in August. In summer the taxi boat goes to Lissos and the coves along the coast, and the coastal ferry links Sougia with Paleochora and Agia Roumeli, and in summer with Gavdos.
Sougia beach has the Blue Flag, in 2025 and again in 2026, and a Sea Access seat takes wheelchair users into the water.
Find old stones
Sougia was Syia, a harbour of the Roman city of Elyros. Its sixth-century mosaic of peacocks is the floor of the village church, and parts of the old aqueduct still stand along the road.

Paleochora, a small town between two bays, with a Venetian castle and everything Sougia does not have.

Chania, the old town and the Venetian harbour, by bus over the White Mountains.
Elafonisi, the pink-sand lagoon, about an hour and a half to two hours by car.
Slow down
Watch the sun go down from the beach, eat late in a taverna on the main street, and walk home along the dry riverbed.

Questions walkers ask
Do you need a car in Sougia?
Not for the walks and the sea. The bus, the ferry and taxis cover most of it. For Elafonisi or the mountain villages a car helps.
Is Sougia good for families?
The beach is long and quiet, but the water gets deep quickly a few metres from the shore, so young children need swimming aids.
