getting around
Ferry
The morning ferry from Sougia reaches Agia Roumeli in about 40–50 minutes. It also connects Sougia to Paleochora, Loutro and Hora Sfakion.
In the afternoon it comes back: at around six in the evening the ferry from Agia Roumeli calls at Sougia, carrying people who spent the day in the village or walked the Samaria gorge, then continues to Paleochora. Times change with the season and the sea.
Bus
From November to March the bus timetable is reduced, with buses only two or three times a week.
In summer there is a bus from Sougia in the early morning, which also takes walkers up towards Omalos and the Samaria gorge, and another in the afternoon. Times change with the season, so check before you travel: ask at Roxanne in the village, or see KTEL Chanion.
Taxi boat
In summer, Sougia Cruises & Rent a Boat runs daily trips from the harbour to beaches reachable only by sea: to Lissos (out around 10:00, back around 15:30) and to Tripiti (out around 8:30), plus a sea taxi and self-drive boats on request. Ask them directly about the day's trips.
Taxi & transfers
Vittorakis Travel and Sougia Taxi Meletis both organise transfers, including to and from Chania airport.
By car
One winding road over the mountains. Drive it slowly, and in daylight the first time.
There is no petrol station in Sougia. The nearest are in Agia Irini, Kandanos and Paleochora, so arrive with a full tank.
Season
The village season runs from early April until the end of October, sometimes into early November.
