When is the best time to visit Sougia?

seasons

Sometime in November, almost all tavernas are closed. The chairs go inside. The ferries stop running regularly.

Scroll

seven months of season and five of silence

Sougia breathes on a seasonal rhythm that has nothing to do with a calendar printed somewhere else.

The gorge fills with snowmelt in late winter and the wildflowers come in April. The village wakes slowly, the beach empties again in late October, and by November you can walk the length of it and meet only goats. Each part of the year is a different place.

The seasonearly April → end of October

The village opens in early April and closes at the end of October.

April & May

The hills turn green, the gorges open and the light is soft enough to walk all day.

June to August

The full weight of the Cretan summer. Swim early, rest at noon, eat late.

September & October

The sea at its warmest, the crowds gone, the first rain and the best sunsets of the year. Our own favourite months.

Some of the trees around the village are centuries old. The harvest starts in late autumn.

Spring & autumn

birdwatching

The valley lies on a migration route between Africa and Europe.

Griffon vultures live in these mountains all year, and we often see them circling high above Sougia. Crete has the largest island population of griffon vultures in the world. Their wings span up to 2.8 metres.

The version of Sougia almost nobody sees.

Autumn in SougiaSeptember – October

October, after the first rain

Days around 25°, the sea still around 23°, and the village back to its own pace.

Then the first autumn rain arrives. The riverbed that has lain dry since spring runs again, rainbows stand over the valley, and when the clouds open, the evenings over the mountains are the most beautiful of the year. These are the weeks we wait for all summer.
