Can you visit Sougia without a car?

One road over the mountains, a boat along the coast, and a week of walking from the same bed.

Can you visit Sougia without a car?

Sougia sits at the end of one winding mountain road, and that is exactly why so many people come without a car. In season, the bus and the coastal ferry connect it well, and for the walks that make this coast famous you need nothing but your feet.

By bus

KTEL Chanion runs buses between Chania and Sougia. The trip takes about one hour forty-five to two hours over the White Mountains. In summer there is an early morning and an afternoon bus from Sougia; from November to March the service is reduced to a few days a week. Times change with the season, so check the KTEL timetable or ask in the village. Tickets are sold at the kiosk on the seafront.

By sea

The ANENDYK ferry links Paleochora, Sougia, Agia Roumeli, Loutro and Hora Sfakion, villages of the south coast that no road connects. In summer some boats also sail to Gavdos. Paleochora to Sougia takes about 45 minutes. Sailings can be cancelled when the sea is rough.

A day trip by ferry: a day in Paleochora

By taxi

Two local companies, Vittorakis Travel and Sougia Taxi Meletis, run transfers, including from Chania airport, about 79 kilometres away. There is no car rental in Sougia; the nearest are in Chania and Paleochora.

A week without a car

Day one, walk to Lissos. Day two, the Agia Irini gorge. Day three, Samaria, down from Omalos and home by boat. Day four, the ferry to Paleochora. And the rest of the week, the beach. Every evening you are back in the same bed.

The walks in this plan: Samaria, two ways
